Professor Shanthi Ameratunga

Professor Shanthi Ameratunga has a personal chair in Epidemiology at the University of Auckland. A paediatrician and public health physician by training, Shanthi’s research focuses on trauma outcomes, injury prevention, disability and youth health. She is the Project Director of the Traffic Related Injury in the Pacific (TRIP) Study, a collaboration with the Fiji National University funded by The Wellcome Trust and the Health Research Council of New Zealand.

Other projects she contributes to include the national youth health surveys (Youth2000 / Youth’07), YourCall (a mobile phone intervention to reduce alcohol related harm among trauma patients), the ADAPT/MEMO trial (mobile phone intervention for depression prevention in young people) and several HRC-funded projects on injury. She has a large number of postgraduate students and coordinates the Global Health module for a class of over 1000 University students entering health science disciplines at the University of Auckland. She has over 170 publications including journal articles, book chapters and monographs.
